Course description

The course deals with the principles, methods and procedures for fracture and geomechanical characterization from borehole based data.  There will be a particular focus on the application of cores and borehole images to the subject, through case studies.  The course is designed to be class based (no software training is included).  Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of issues they face from their prospects/fields.


Course objective

1.    Introduce the basic principles of stress, strain and deformation
2.    Define fractures and fracture characterization from geological and geomechanical points of view 
3.    Outline the tools and methods used to detect, diagnose and assess the fractures from borehole scale data, particularly core and borehole              images.
4.    Outline the methods used to assess the current day principal stresses
5.    Discuss the uncertainties associated with the above tools/methods
6.    Demonstrate examples of applications of the borehole-based characterization to hydrocarbon exploration and development in both                      conventional and unconventional plays and reservoirs

Participants' profile 

Geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and managers who deal with:
1.    Fracture characterization, or manage reservoirs where natural fractures and geomechanics may have an impact on reservoir performance. 
2.    Unconventional exploration and development where geomechanics and natural fractures are essential in well planning, placement and                  completion e.g. hydrofracturing.
3.    Geotechnical projects where fractures and geomechanics are considered of crucial impact. 
4.    Environmental impact of fractures e.g. seismic hazards assessment, hazardous waste disposal
5.    Alternative energy e.g. geothermal energy.

About the instructor

Mohammed S. Ameen is Saudi Aramco’s Lead Consultant in Geomechanics, Unconventional Resources Exploration and Development Department.   He holds a PhD in Structural Geology and Geomechanics, Imperial College, London, 1988. Ameen has over 28 years of diverse industrial and academic experience, on both hydrocarbon exploration and development and geotechnical engineering projects in Europe and the Middle East. He joined Saudi Aramco in 1998 and spent 7 years in the Reservoir Characterization Department dealing with both oil and gas (carbonate sand siliciclastics) reservoirs across Saudi Arabia. In October 2004 he was delegated the task of establishing and leading an in-house team specialized in Structural Geology and Geomechanics to serve the exploration and development needs company-wide. In 2012, Ameen was elected by Aramco’s board to the position of Principal Professional, in Geomechanics for the newly established Unconventional Exploration and Development Department, to deal with operational geomechanics for well planning, well placement and completion, e.g. hydrofracturing.

He received the following awards: four US patents on geomechanical and fracture characterization methods and procedures, AAPG Distinguished Lecturer (Middle East, 2011), AAPG Distinguished Lecturer (Europe, 2013), EAGE Distinguished Instructor (Short Courses, 2015), Keynote speaker for SPE, AAPG and EAGE events, Associate editor (AAPG Bulletin, 2011-2013) and Associate editor Journal of Unconventional Oil and Gas Resources (JUOGR, 2012-present). He published 28 peer reviewed articles and is editor and Co-editor of three books for the Geological Society London. 

Mohammed has been an instructor since many years. He was an instructor of the following industrial courses: AAPG Course for Petrobras (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 22-26 November 2010), AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE) (Houston, Texas, USA, 10-13 April, 2011), AAPG International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) (Milan, Italy, 23-26 October, 2011) and Upstream Training Center, Saudi Aramco, Image Logs Applications, since 2011.
