Theme

The theme for the conference is "Optimising from Discovery to Recovery".

The conference will be held at the SECC in Glasgow from 29 May to 2 June 2000.

Introduction

The EAGE is delighted to invite members to Scotland to attend and participate in Glasgow 2000, our 62nd Conference and Technical Exhibition. The conference theme "Optimising from Discovery to recovery" reflects the continuing need to do better more cheaply, and relates to the constantly advancing technology. It is also in keeping with the current status of the oil and gas industry in NorthWest Europe, which embraces new field development through to mature field management. In particular it reflects recent experience of low and unstable world oil prices. Geologically, Scotland has great richness and diversity, with sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks ranging variously in age from Pre-Cambrian to Tertiary and Recent. It is the birthplace of a wealth of fundamental geological thinking, by many pioneers of our science, such as Miller and Hutton. Geology has shaped much of our industrial history; coal mining in Central Scotland, and mineral mining, and now of course the offshore oil and gas industry. For the past three decades, Scotland has been the centre for exploration, development and production from the UK Continental Shelf.

Conference & Exhibition Facilities

The Scottish Exhibition - Conference Centre is one of the finest conference venues in Europe, comprising exhibition halls, a conference suite, and an auditorium, all of which provide a range of modern facilities. The SECC is situated near the centre of Glasgow, 11 miles from the international airport, and it has a railway station, bus terminus and heliport, in addition to a large car park. There are many on-site facilities, such as a hotel, restaurants, bars, and a bank.

Three well-known groups of musicians will perform a variety of music, both classical and Scottish, to suite all tastes.

1. Quartz String Quartet

Quartz, comprising four members of the highly acclaimed Scottish Chamber Orchestra has played all over the world, from Orkney to Paraguay, and has appeared numerous times on TV and radio. The musicians draw their audience into the performance through their enthusiasm and stylish presentation, which is both informative and fun. Quartz’s repertoire is vast, ranging from classical to light music to Scottish folk music.

2. Cappella Nova Quartet

Cappella Nova is Scotland's leading professional vocal ensemble specialising in early and contemporary music. The group has won many awards. The Cappella Nova Quartet was formed in 1998 by four singers from Cappella Nova. Their repertoire features a thousand years of music from Medieval plainsong to contemporary works and close-harmony classics, in finely fashioned and accessible programmes, always including plenty of genuine Scottish repertoire (often sung in 16th-century Scots!).

3. The Cast

Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis are the multi-talented Scottish duo known as The Cast, whose albums The Winnowing and Colours of Lichen have attracted generous critical acclaim. Their inventive use of vocal and instrumental harmonies brings a fresh approach to the most venerable traditional material.
