1st North Africa/Mediterranean Petroleum & Geosciences Conference and Exhibition
Tunis, Tunisia
Opportunities & Challenges From the Desert to the Deep Water

President's Welcome

The EAGE is delighted to welcome you to the Tunis 2003 First North Africa / Mediterranean Petroleum & Geosciences Conference and Exhibition. This major event is being brought to you by the EAGE in conjunction with ETAP, the Tunisian National Oil Company, North African state oil companies, and western oil and service companies working in the region.

This conference has been born out of the recognition of the ever-increasing commercial and political importance of the region, and of the interdependence of the countries bordering the Mediterranean, in North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. In particular, oil and gas play a very prominent and fundamental part in this this relationship. Since as a professional organisation it is the primary role of the EAGE to promote communication and co-operation between those working in the subsurface disciplines, clearly it is both appropriate and a privilege for EAGE to organize Tunis 2003. Greater communication helps to encourage greater understanding, and hence greater stability and benefits to the region.

The conference programme of oral and poster presentations, workshops and short courses gives a wonderfully diverse mix which well reflects the wide range of geological and geographical environments in the region. The comprehensive and ambitious theme of "Opportunities and Challenges from Desert to Deep Water" is more than met by the conference programme! And on the all-important social and family side there can be few more fascinating places than Tunis, with all its evidence of human endeavour over several millenia beside the timeless Mediterranean.

The EAGE is all about communication and relationships, and the conference structure at Tunis 2003 reflects this directly. Although the EAGE is European in name, our outlook is very much wider. Thus it is entirely appropriate that EAGE should seek actively to develop further links with our immediate neighbours in the Mediterranean region. Tunis 2003 is but one step in fostering closer links in North Africa, but it is a very important step.

On behalf of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, I hope you enjoy the conference and exhibition, gain new ideas, and make new contacts and friends!
