The Balkan Geophysical Society (BGS) was established in 1993 in Florina, Greece, to promote peaceful research in basic and applied geophysics, and contribute to the collaboration and mutual assistance among geophysicists. Founding members of BGS are the geophysical societies of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey and Serbia. The Hungarian Association of Geophysicists joined in 2002. It is the tradition of the BGS to hold a major international geophysical conference and exhibition every three years in alternating countries of their member societies:

1996 - Athens; 1999 - Istanbul; 2002 - Sofia; 2005 - Bucharest; 2009 - Belgrade, and now 2011 - Budapest.

Inaugurated in 1849 as the first permanent bridge over the Danube in this region, the Budapest Chain Bridge was selected as congress symbol of connecting efforts of our scientific societies.
