On behalf of EAGE and of the ECMOR scientific committee, we are pleased to invite you to the 13th European Conference on the Mathematics of Oil Recovery - ECMOR XIII. The conference will be held from the 10th to the 13th of September 2012 in the centre of Biarritz. This cosmopolitan city is located in the South West of France along the Atlantic coast with beautiful views on the Pyrenees. It is known as the pearl of the Basque Coast for its impressive cliffs and rollers breaking against rocks and reefs, its superb bathing beaches, and its typical Basque culture, architecture, and tasty food.
As oil will continue to be the leading source of energy in transport and chemical sectors for several decades, more and more research is needed to develop innovative technologies that will extend the reserves including unconventional resources, increase oil and gas production, while preserving the environment, and managing risks. In response to global warming, CO2 sequestration must be thoroughly investigated. Mathematical and numerical modelling, multiphysics couplings, data assimilation, uncertainty and risk management, optimization and control, are crucial tools to face all these current and incoming challenges.
Every two years, the ECMOR conference gathers applied mathematicians and geosciences engineers from both Academia and Industry to focus on recent advances in geological and reservoir modelling. An important aspect of the conference is the interplay between modelling and data integration, as well as between theory and practice, where numerical computations play a central role.
As it was the case for ECMOR XII, a call for extended versions of ECMOR proceedings will be sent after the conference for publication in a special issue of the journal Computational Geosciences.
We warmly invite you to submit an abstract in order to share your results and new ideas in these fields in the friendly and stimulating atmosphere of the ECMOR conference.
Looking forward to seeing you in Biarritz,
Roland Masson and Pierre Samier
Co-chairmen, ECMOR XIII
