Title: Quantitative Data Integration and Joint Inversion from Surface to Reservoir (Joint NSGD & OGGD workshop)
Room: Stolz 1
Convenors: Aria Abubakar (Schlumberger)
Michael Jordan (SINTEF)
Joseph Doetsch (ETH Zürich)
Ranajit Ghose (Delft University of Technology)

Workshop description

A central goal in geophysics is to provide accurate models of the subsurface, including quantitative estimates of rock properties and fluid content at different scales. Combining complementary geophysical datasets typically reduces the ambiguity in inversion results and hence improves the interpretation. Joint inversion has also been shown to improve classification of lithological zones and to allow investigation of petrophysical relationships. Hence, joint inversion and quantitative geophysical data integration have become popular on scales ranging from near-surface applications, to the mineral and oil exploration scale. The shift towards joint inversion and quantitative geophysical data integration has also been driven by multi-method datasets becoming more widely available.

This workshop will present and discuss recent developments, case studies and efficient algorithms for joint inversion. The questions addressed will include

  • What are the additional values of joint inversion processing?
  • When is joint inversion feasible?
  • Which data should be and can be combined?
  • What is the physical basis behind joint inversion of different datasets?
  • Structural or petrophysical coupling?
  • At which scale should the coupling operators act?
  • Simultaneous or cascaded inversion?
  • Can petrophysical relationships be improved with joint inversion?
  • How can joint inversion improve lithological classification?

The aim of the workshop is to bring together the key technical experts in these fields to discuss current state of the art, recent trends and future developments in joint inversion and quantitative geophysical data integration.
