Executive Session on the Black Sea - Regional Focus

Wednesday 1 June 2016, 08:30 - 11:30 hrs.

Chairmen:   G. Tari (OMV Upstream)
  J.J. Martin Bañon (REPSOL)

As the Black Sea Basin became an emerging deepwater basin in the last few years due to the gas discoveries in the Romanian sector, there are some very important challenges facing both the NOCs and IOCs in maintaining exploration success in the region. Historically, oil, gas-condensate and gas production was restricted to the shallow waters of the Black Sea shelf. Currently, there are deepwater wells being drilled using the most modern semi-subs and drill-ships in 2000+ m water depth in the Black Sea Basin. Besides the general trend of moving from the shelf to deepwater, it is the general advance in technology over the past few decades that has increased our collective ability to identify, drill, appraise and develop additional hydrocarbons, leading to dramatic increases in production before the end of the decade. Similarly to its more mature neighbor, the Caspian Basin, advances in completion technologies, 4D seismics, high-pressure drilling technologies, extended reach drilling and a deeper understanding of the Black Sea pressure and fluid systems will play key roles in future discoveries and development projects in various parts of the basin. This session will explore the current exploration trends in the broader Black Sea Basin, in the light of their particular challenges, as viewed by prominent industry leaders and technical experts working in this region.
